Instincts

The next step after introducing the Dimensions of attention is to derive the instincts from them. The first four dimensions of attention result in four ways to assure your existence as a human being. The first three instincts are part of the common Enneagram doctrine, the transcendental instinct and the idea of deriving the instincts from dimensions is my own theory.

The sexual instinct (sx)

The sexual instinct derives from the first dimension. The individual tries to survive by focusing on inner feelings and passions, which usually leads to the need of being attractive to other individuals, be it for a sexual or romantic relationship, deep friendships, or political leadership. The term can be misleading, since, though the instinct has a correlation to a high libido, it doesn't have to do with sex. But I didn't find a significantly better term for it yet.

The social instinct (so/sc)

The social instinct derives from the second dimension. The individual tries to survive by having an overview over its environment in the here and now, where support is needed or which trends can be followed. This usually ends up in the need to belong to groups and to be widely popular.

The self-preservation instinct (sp)

The self-preservation instinct derives from the third dimension. The individual tries to survive by dealing with the physical reality and finding and containing systems to rely on. This usually results in a life with high stability and a sense for pragmatism and realism.

The transcendental instinct (tr)

The transcendental instinct is a theory by myself. It derives from the fourth dimension. The individual sees reality through glasses of abstraction which usually ends up in a desire for high mental independence and an impact on the future which becomes part of their identity.
